Frequently Asked Questions

Sexual abstinence of 2u20135 days prior to sample collection is required for standardised results. Abstinence shorter than 2 days may reduce sperm concentration; longer than 5 days may reduce motility. Your doctor will confirm the exact abstinence period required.
The sample is collected by masturbation into a sterile wide-mouthed container provided by our laboratory. Collection should ideally be performed on-site in our dedicated, private collection room. If collected at home, the sample must be delivered to the laboratory within 60 minutes, kept at body temperature during transport, and protected from extreme temperatures.
WHO 2021 lower reference limits include: volume u22651.4 mL, concentration u226516 million/mL, total sperm count u226539 million, progressive motility u226530%, normal morphology u22654% (Kruger). Results below these thresholds do not necessarily mean infertility u2014 they indicate further investigation or specialist consultation is warranted.
CASA results are typically ready within 2 hours of sample receipt. A full written report from our andrologist is provided the same day.
A single abnormal result does not confirm infertility. Semen parameters can vary significantly between collections due to illness, stress, or abstinence duration. Most guidelines recommend two semen analyses separated by at least 4 weeks before drawing clinical conclusions.
