Breath Testing Overview

Breath tests require no blood draw or invasive procedures, making them an ideal first-line investigation for GI symptoms. Pre-test preparation instructions are provided at booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs u2014 e.g. omeprazole, pantoprazole) must be stopped at least 2 weeks before the test. Antibiotics and bismuth-containing medications must be stopped at least 4 weeks before. These medications can suppress H. pylori and cause false-negative results.
Yes. You should fast for at least 4 hours before the test. You may drink plain water but should avoid food, citric acid drinks, and chewing gum.
The test involves blowing into a collection bag to provide a baseline breath sample, then drinking a small solution of 13C-labelled urea. After a 20u201330 minute waiting period, you blow into a second bag. The two samples are analysed for changes in 13COu2082 concentration to determine H. pylori status.
The UBT has sensitivity and specificity exceeding 95% when correctly performed with appropriate medication washout. It detects only active, live H. pylori infection u2014 not past infection u2014 making it ideal for test-of-cure following eradication therapy.
Results are available within 4 hours of sample collection. A written report is sent to your referring physician. If you are using the UBT to confirm eradication, the test should be performed no earlier than 4 weeks after completing antibiotic therapy.
